I think P. Craig Russell is one of the most talented comic book artists in the fantasy genre. I first took note of his work in a series of books from Eclipse Comics several years ago. Craig’s art is rich in the Art Nouveau style (which I love).
I pulled the scans below from a story found in Night Music #2 published by Eclipse in the mid-1980s. It’s a story absent from words and shows a progression of an ethereal dream. I like that he titled it a “fragment of a dream” as if there is an incomplete story hidden therein. Do you have fantastic dreams in which you escape the real world to a mythological paradise? I rarely get those, but when I do it’s a bittersweet experience because the dream is dazzling and exhilarating but as each moment passes upon waking, the memory of it and the feeling that accompanies it fade away. I think Craig beautifully captured that small period in magical timelessness when the dream is vividly real.
