How’s your luck holding out? Ours is poor. We just went looking for a few comics that we want to highlight in future posts and wouldn’t you know it — last box. We’ve noticed this sort of thing happening with regularity. Frustrating to say the least but also perplexing. Isn’t the whole coin toss thing supposed to weigh in here? You know, toss a coin and you have a 50-50 chance of getting heads or tails? And over several tosses, randomness will even out so about half of each toss will be allocated to each side? Seems right, but that’s not what we’ve been experiencing.
Of course, one might think erroneously that results with the less than expected 50% positive return in recent events might seem like bad luck was afoot when in reality only a few random episodes weren’t really demonstrating a negative trend. But we sure get the feeling it isn’t so since we don’t remember any past streaks of good fortune.
We did an experiment the other day. It seems that whenever we get back from the gym, we insert the wrong key into the door handle lock. The keys for the door handle and dead bolt are the same type. We don’t normally lock the bolt when we head out to hurt ourselves on treadmills and weight machines since we’re back within an hour or so. Therefore, there’s only one lock to concern ourselves with and mathematics would suggest that over time the key we fumbled for in the dark would end up being the right one about 50% of the time. Again, sure doesn’t seem that way. So, we decided to trick Fate. One day we came to the door, reached for the key, selected it and then promptly deselected it and chose the other one. It was inserted into the lock. So far so good, but, again, the keys are the same type, so either key would enter the chamber without problem. Now it was time to turn it. With bated breath we paused, anticipating good fortune (actually, our breath was raspy from just completing a meager workout, so “bated” should probably be changed to “bad”). The turn began and then … you guessed. Clunk. No engagement of the tumblers. What. the. hell. So much for randomness. The gods are conspiring again.
Anyway, we found the comics so new work is afoot. We can feel your excitement.
